Lower Key Stage 2

Lower Key Stage 2 (LKS2) consists of 3 mixed year 3 and year 4 classes – Cherry, Hazel and Rowan. All classes follow the same curriculum; see below for our latest topic and useful documents. Individual class timetables are in the links.

Term 6 - what do people want from their local area?

Our geography topic this term is focusing on a local river town: Abingdon and our enquiry question is: ‘What do people want from their local area?’ We will be developing our map skills using OS Maps, identifying the human and physical features in our local area and exploring how Abingdon has changed to meet the needs of its residents. Your child will have the opportunity to explore this topic through geography, science and English. In addition to the topic work and daily mathematics lessons, there will RSE sessions, PE, RE, spelling, French, computing, music and art.

In our writing this term,  we will be using our class novel as a writing stimulus for writing a description about a sentimental teddy. Our class novel for the term is The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo.

For our second piece of writing, the children will be writing a letter using their persuasive techniques to encourage the reader not to build a dam. We will be using The Dam by David Almond as a stimulus for this piece.

Term 5 - are all rivers the same?

This term our topic is a Geography based one centred around rivers. Our enquiry question is ‘Are all rivers the same?’

We will be finding out about the water cycle, features of rivers and how they are formed, how rivers are used and how the Thames has been used in the past and how it will be used in the future. Within this topic, we will have an exciting trip to the Earth trust where we will be visiting the River Thames and learning about its key features.

In our writing this  term we will be linking our work to our Rivers theme. We begin with:

A River by Marc Martin. It starts with the question: There is a river outside my window. Where will it take me?
The children will use this as a stimulus to write their own river narrative.

Our class novel this term will be The Wind in the Willows

Terms 3 and 4 – which time period would you prefer to live in?

Our enquiry question this term is: ‘Which time period would you prefer to live in?’ In this topic, we will learn about the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. We will explore and learn about these different time periods in history to help us understand how they got their names, what life was like and how they influenced our lives today.  We will entwine our school values of Aspiration, Compassion and Enthusiasm throughout the topic.

We will explore this topic through our History, Art, DT and English lessons. The children will continue to improve and gain confidence in their oracy skills and will be encouraged to complete a range of discussion-based activities throughout each lesson.

What else are we learning about over the next two terms

In reading, we are looking at the novel – The Wild Way Home by Sophie Kirtley.

In Science, we are looking at an Animals unit of work. This includes looking at how skeletons and muscles work; how we get our nutrition through our food; how the digestive system works and we will end our science block by looking at food chains.

In Art, we will be drawing and painting a mammoth using natural paints. We will also learn about Pablo Picasso and the different techniques he used in his paintings.

In DT, we will be completing a textiles unit in Term 4 where we will put our sewing skills to the test by making our own stone-age pouches.

Term 2 – is the journey worth the risk?

We are all very excited about our new topic this term. We are heading into the world of mountains to explore our enquiry question: ‘Is The Journey Worth The Risk?’

During the topic, we will be learning where mountains can be found, how they are formed and what their features are. We will explore this exciting topic through our Geography, English and Science lessons. In English, we will be writing calligram poems where the children will write about the feelings and atmosphere that might be felt on a mountain. We will be using the book 'Everest' for our writing stimulus for the last two writing units.  The children will write a diary entry as Sir Edmund Hilary about his experience and then a newspaper report about his successful climb to the summit of Everest.

What else are we learning about this term?

Our class novel for this term is The Abominables.

In Art, we are doing still-life observation drawings of fruit.

In Science, we will be learning about the different types of rocks and soils.
