Pine Class Year 5/6

Welcome to Pine Class!

Welcome to Pine Class! We are a class of 26 kind and enthusiastic learners from Years 5 and 6.

Our teacher is Miss Elliot.

Throughout the week, we are supported by Mrs Suttner.

Our PE lessons are Tuesday and Friday mornings.

Term Four

Whose job is it to care for our planet?

Sophie's heart sank. "Whose job is it to care for our

planet?" she wondered aloud, her innocent voice

barely rising above the cacophony. As she gazed at

the chaos around her, a sense of urgency ignited

within. There had to be more she could do—after all,

this was her world, and it needed saving.

This term, Pine Class will be exploring the impact of using fossil fuels and non-renewable resources on our planet. We will explore the evidence of their impact and explore ways in which we can live and learn sustainably to ensure that the children of tomorrow have all resources they need. We will learn about the dangers tomorrow could hold, by studying the chilling Floodland by Marcus Sedgewick and learn about successful sustainable cities such as Curitiba, in Brazil and Copenhagen, in Denmark to make recommendations for our local cities.

Coming up this term...

This term, we answer the question, 'How diverse are the Americas?'.

We will learn about their location on our planet and how this leads to a wide range of climates and physical geographical features throughout their landscapes. We will learn about the human geography of The Americas, considering the major exports of key countries and the natural resources and settlements in key locations. These will help us to consider how diverse The Americas really are.

In our English lessons, we will write a persuasive leaflet about Yellowstone National Park, encouraging tourists to visit this unique location. Later on in the term, we will use the animation ‘Hugh’, which retells the Apache Tribes traditional tale on how the stars were formed in the night sky.

Our class novel this term is by American author Louis Sachar and centres around the bad luck of Stanley Yelnats and his family. After Stanley is convicted of theft, he is sent to Camp Green Lake, a correctional facility with odd methods of rehabilitation! This book is a must read for all children; we know they will love it.
