Hazel Class Year 4

Welcome to Hazel class where you will find Mrs Elliot, Mrs Young, and 30 kind, bright and enthusiastic learners.

Term 5

 

This term’s topic has a historical theme. We will be learning about life in Ancient Rome and asking questions such as ‘Where did the Roman Empire come from?’, ‘How did the Roman army help to expand the Roman Empire?’, ‘What was Britain like before the Romans invaded?’, ‘Who was Boudica?’  and ‘What did the Romans build after they settled in Britain?’. We will be learning about the story of Rome, the everyday life of Celts and Romans and the Roman gods. We will be exploring this topic through a variety of subjects including making Roman shields in DT. 

 

In addition to the topic work and daily Mathematics lessons, there will be Personal, Social and Health sessions, PE, RE, Spelling, French, guided reading, computing and Science. We will also continue to learn how to play the violin as part of our music sessions.

Term 4

This term, the children will be exploring the wonderful world of bees! 

 

Inspired by our annual drama production, which this year is ‘The Bee Musical’, the children will be learning about the important role bees play in our eco-system and food chain. 

 

The children will be specifically focusing on: Writing an explanation text, ‘How Bees Make Honey’, creating honeycomb inspired artwork, and using their scientific investigative skills to answer the question - Could we survive without bees?

 

Homework will continue to be set each week on Seesaw, predominantly focusing on spelling patterns and maths consolidation, in addition to daily reading.  

 

The children will continue to work on their times tables recall in class, in preparation for the Multiplication Check in term 6. Below is a link to a website which replicates the test. Please support your child in working towards the assessment with regular practice at home.

Term 3 - Stars and Stripes

 

                             

                      

 

Our topic this term is called ‘Stars and Stripes’. This term we will be finding out about North America. We will be exploring different landmarks, weather and geography across America and how their culture is similar and different to our own. We will journey from Native America to modern day, looking at New York and the Statue of Liberty, to Washington and The White House! 

 

We will be exploring this geography topic through Art, Design Technology and English.  In addition to the topic work and daily Mathematics lessons, there will be Personal, Social and Health sessions, PE, RE, Spelling, French, guided reading, computing and Science. We will also continue to learn how to play the violin as part of our music sessions.

Term 2: Mysterious Mayans

The children will uncover the mysteries of the Mayan civilisation with this fascinating cross-curricular topic. We will discover where and when the Maya built their magnificent civilisation, taking a trip deep into the rainforests of Central America as we explore Mayan ruins and temples. We embark on a journey that will help us uncover the life, society and civilisation of the ancient Mayan people.

 

Within the topic, the children will gain understanding of the Mayan civilisation creation story, learn about the Gods the Maya worshipped, the foods they ate, understand the Mayan calendar and number system, sketch impressive ancient temples, use mosaic to design their very own Mayan masks and even have the chance to sample Mayan hot chocolate! 

 

Our literacy work will also be inspired by the text - The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry.

 

Home learning will continue to be set on SeeSaw, with additional learning opportunities available on Times Tables Rockstars, Mathletics and Purple Mash. 

Term 1

 

Our topic this term is based around natural disasters and is called ‘Angry Planet’ We have planned and thought about all of the exciting things that we would like to find out about the natural disasters, where they occur, how they happen and what impact they have. Our literacy lessons will be based around this theme and we will be looking at writing narratives, instructional texts and a newspaper report. We also have our trip to the London Natural History Museum.
